Executive Functioning Skills

The Eardley Education Executive Functioning Program is designed to support the cognitive development of students, providing targeted exercises and activities that enhance working memory, attention, self-regulation, and other foundational skills. The program progresses to more advanced skills like planning, organization, and time management, helping students become independent, self-sufficient learners who can succeed in their academic or social settings.

For students with ADHD, the Executive Functioning program can be especially beneficial. By targeting the underlying cognitive processes that are often impaired in ADHD, our program provides students with the tools and strategies they need to succeed. We help students learn how to focus their attention, manage their time effectively, and stay organized, all while building their confidence and self-esteem.

But our program isn’t just for students with ADHD. It’s designed to help all learners, from those who struggle with executive functioning to those who simply want to enhance their cognitive abilities. We believe that every student can benefit from learning these essential skills, and we tailor our instruction to meet the unique needs of each student.

Through our Executive Functioning program, students learn not only how to succeed in the classroom, but also how to apply these skills to real-world situations. Our program is grounded in research and best practices, and our experienced educators provide individualized instruction that is both engaging and effective. We’re committed to helping every student reach their full potential, and our Executive Functioning program is just one of the ways we do that.

What is Executive Functioning?

Making Order from Chaos

Executive Functioning refers to a set of cognitive skills critical for success in school, work, and everyday life. Our model identifies eight core Executive Functioning skills, including Response Inhibition, Working Memory, Emotional Control, Sustained Attention, Task Initiation, Planning and Prioritization, Organization, and Time Management. These skills allow us to manage our lives effectively, set goals, plan and prioritize our activities, initiate and sustain focus on tasks, regulate our emotions and behavior, and adapt to changing situations.

Response Inhibition involves the ability to resist impulses or distractions and control one’s behavior. Working Memory involves the ability to hold and manipulate information in one’s mind. Emotional Control involves the ability to regulate one’s emotions and impulses. Sustained Attention involves the ability to maintain focus on a task for an extended period. Task Initiation involves the ability to begin a task without procrastination. Planning and Prioritization involve the ability to set goals, develop plans, and prioritize activities. Organization involves the ability to keep track of information and materials. Time Management involves the ability to manage one’s time effectively and meet deadlines.

Together, these core Executive Functioning skills enable us to manage our lives effectively and achieve our goals. By developing these skills, individuals can become more independent, self-sufficient learners who can succeed in any academic or social setting.

Common Challenges:

Response inhibition is the ability to control one’s behavior, resist impulses, and avoid distractions. This skill is essential for success in all aspects of life, as it allows individuals to focus on their goals and make sound decisions. Children who struggle with response inhibition may find it difficult to avoid distractions, delay gratification, or resist impulsive behaviors. However, with practice, children can develop this skill by practicing self-control, setting clear goals, and avoiding situations that may trigger impulsive behaviors.

Working memory is the ability to hold and manipulate information in one’s mind. This skill is critical for success in academic and social settings, as it enables individuals to process and remember information. Children who struggle with working memory may find it challenging to remember instructions, organize their thoughts, or solve problems. With our instruction, children can develop this skill by using strategies like the Seeing Stars® Program, the Visualizing & Verbalizing® Program, memory palaces, and chunking to help them remember and manipulate information more effectively.

Emotional control is the ability to regulate one’s emotions and impulses. This skill is essential for success in all aspects of life, as it enables individuals to manage their feelings and respond appropriately to different situations. Children who struggle with emotional control may struggle to manage their anger, frustration, or anxiety. With our instruction, children can develop this skill using techniques like deep breathing, visualization, and mindfulness meditation to help them regulate their emotions.

Sustained attention is the ability to stay focused on a task for an extended period. This skill is critical for success in academic and social settings, enabling individuals to complete tasks and avoid distractions. Children who struggle with sustained attention may find it challenging to complete assignments, avoid distractions, or maintain focus during lectures or meetings. However, with practice, children can develop this skill by using strategies like setting goals, breaking tasks into smaller parts, and using visual aids like timers or reminders to help them stay focused.

Task initiation is the ability to begin a task without procrastination. This skill is critical for success in all aspects of life, as it enables individuals to start projects and avoid distractions. Children who struggle with task initiation may find it challenging to start their homework, begin a new project, or focus on a task without first needing reminders or distractions. With time and practice, children can develop this skill by using strategies like setting goals, breaking tasks into smaller parts, and using visual aids like checklists or reminders to help them get started.

Planning and prioritization is the ability to set goals, develop plans, and prioritize activities. This skill is critical for success in all aspects of life, as it enables individuals to manage their time and achieve their goals. Children who struggle with planning and prioritization may find it challenging to manage their time, complete assignments, or make decisions. However, with practice, children can develop this skill by using strategies like visualizing schedules, breaking tasks into smaller parts, and visual aids like calendars or checklists to help them stay on track.

Organization is the ability to keep track of information and materials. This skill is critical for success in all aspects of life, as it enables individuals to manage their time, complete assignments, and find the needed materials. Children who struggle with organization may find it challenging to keep their workspace clean and tidy or to locate the materials they need for their assignments. However, with practice, children can develop this skill by using strategies like setting up organizational systems, keeping a tidy workspace, and using visual aids like color-coding or labeling to help them stay organized.

Time management is the ability to manage one’s time effectively and meet deadlines. This skill is critical for success in academic and social settings, enabling individuals to complete assignments on time, attend meetings, and plan out their day. Children who struggle with time management may struggle to manage their time effectively, procrastinate, or fail to meet deadlines. However, with practice, children can develop this skill by setting specific time goals, prioritizing tasks before starting, breaking tasks into smaller parts, and using visual aids like calendars or checklists to help them stay on track.
