A Checklist of Florida Reading Standards K-5

Kindergarten Checklist:

  • Recognizing and Naming Letters: Can your child identify and name all uppercase and lowercase letters?
  • Phonological Awareness: Does your child demonstrate an understanding of rhymes, syllables, and beginning sounds in words?
  • Print Concepts: Can your child correctly identify the parts of a book (e.g., front cover, back cover, title, author)?
  • Comprehension and Fluency: Does your child understand and retell simple stories and recognize common sight words?

Grade 1 Checklist:

  • Phonics and Word Recognition: Can your child decode and read one-syllable words using phonics knowledge?
  • Vocabulary Development: Is your child expanding their vocabulary by understanding and using new words in spoken and written language?
  •  Reading Fluency: Can your child read grade-appropriate texts with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression?
