Why Eardley Education Uses the Science of Reading Approach and Why It Works
At Eardley Education, we believe in giving every student the best chance to succeed, and reading is a huge part of that success. We use a method called the Science of Reading (SoR) to help our students become strong, confident readers. This approach is based on years of research and shows us the most effective ways to teach reading. In this post, we’ll explain what the Science of Reading is, why we use it, and how it works to help children become better readers.
The Science of Reading is all about understanding how the brain learns to read. It takes the guesswork out of teaching reading and focuses on the skills that matter most. Researchers from different fields—like psychology, education, and neuroscience—have studied what works best for teaching reading, and that’s what SoR is built on.
This approach helps teachers focus on the key skills every child needs to become a good reader, such as:
We’ve chosen the Science of Reading because we want to give our students the best chance to succeed, using methods that are proven to work. Here’s why this approach is so effective for our students:
It’s Based on Research: We don’t use methods that are just popular or trendy. The Science of Reading is backed by decades of research, so we know it works for students of all ages and abilities.
It’s Targeted to Each Student: Every student is different, so we need an approach that lets us teach each child according to their needs. The Science of Reading breaks reading down into smaller skills, so we can focus on the areas where each child needs the most help.
It Builds Strong Foundations: We focus heavily on the basic skills needed for reading, especially connecting sounds to letters and remembering what letters look like (visual memory). These skills work together to help students decode words correctly and confidently.
It Works for All Ages: Whether your child is just starting to read or needs extra help, the Science of Reading is flexible enough to support learners at every stage.
It’s Focused on Long-Term Success: We’re not just preparing students to pass a test or finish a book; we’re giving them the skills they need to enjoy reading for the rest of their lives.
One of the things we love about the Science of Reading is that it provides a step-by-step process for teaching reading, with plenty of opportunities to assess and adjust as needed. Here’s how it works in our programs:
We start by assessing every student’s reading skills. This helps us figure out what they already know and what they need to work on. By understanding where they are, we can create a custom learning plan that’s just right for them.
As students move through their lessons, we keep track of their progress. We regularly check to see if they’re improving and whether they need more support in any areas. This helps us ensure that every child is learning and growing at their own pace.
The assessments we do give us important information about each student. We use this data to guide our teaching. If a child needs more help with a specific skill—like sounding out words or understanding what they read—we adjust our lessons to meet those needs.
If a child isn’t making as much progress as expected, we step in with extra support. This might mean more one-on-one time or extra practice with a certain skill. We make sure no child falls behind by giving them the help they need when they need it.
We track each student’s progress with pre- and post-testing. We assess them at the beginning and end of their time with us to see how much they’ve improved. This helps us—and you—see the real, measurable growth they’ve made in their reading skills.
At Eardley Education, we know that learning to read is about more than just sounding out words. We put a lot of focus on helping students remember what letters look like (visual memory) and how those letters connect to the sounds they make. This combination is key to learning to read.
By building strong visual memory, students can recognize letters and letter patterns more easily, which makes it easier to sound out new words. For example, if a student can visualize the letters in “cat” and connect them to the sounds /k/, /a/, and /t/, they can read the word more fluently.
We also work on helping students create mental images when they read. This helps them understand what they’re reading and remember new words. For example, if a student reads the word “elephant,” we encourage them to picture an elephant in their mind. This makes the word more meaningful and easier to remember.
The Science of Reading works because it’s built on how the brain learns to read. Reading doesn’t come naturally to the brain, so it has to be taught in a way that makes sense to how we process sounds, letters, and words. The Science of Reading teaches these skills step by step, in a way that’s easy for the brain to understand.
Older methods of teaching reading, like guessing words based on pictures or memorizing whole words, don’t work as well for most kids. With the Science of Reading, we help students understand the building blocks of reading, so they can decode words on their own and improve their reading skills for life.
At Eardley Education, we believe that every child can become a strong reader with the right support and instruction. The Science of Reading approach gives us the tools we need to teach reading in a way that works for all students. By focusing on foundational skills like phonics and visual memory, and using regular assessments to track progress, we make sure that every student gets the personalized help they need to succeed.
Our goal is to help your child not just learn to read, but to love reading. With the Science of Reading approach, we’re confident that we can make that happen.
