Finish Strong: Use Last Two Weeks of School to Prepare for Next Year
The final two weeks of the school year are a whirlwind. Between end-of-year celebrations, final projects, and the looming excitement of summer break, it’s easy for both parents and students to coast into the finish line.
However, this transition period is also a golden opportunity. While your child’s current grade level is still fresh in everyone’s mind, right now is the perfect time to gauge their academic standing, identify their needs, and lay the groundwork for a successful start to the next school year.
Here is what you can do over the next couple of weeks to understand your child's current abilities and set them up for future success!
1. Initiate an "End-of-Year Review" Conversation

Before the school routine completely dissolves, sit down with your child for a relaxed conversation about the past year. Ask open-ended questions that encourage them to reflect on their own learning:
-
What was your favorite subject this year and why?
-
What was the hardest thing you had to learn?
-
Is there anything you wish you had more time to practice?
Validating their feelings—whether they feel proud of a specific project or frustrated by a tough math unit—helps you understand their academic mindset and confidence levels.
2. Connect with the Teacher One Last Time

Teachers are incredibly busy during the last week of school, but a brief email asking for a high-level summary can be invaluable. Ask them about one or two areas where your child shines, and one or two areas they recommend focusing on over the summer. Teachers have spent the last nine months observing your child’s learning habits and can offer insights that grades alone cannot.
3. Review the Portfolio, Not Just the Report Card

When the final backpack dump happens, don’t just throw everything into the recycling bin. Take an hour or so to look through their final tests, essays, and projects.
-
Look for trends: Are they consistently losing points on reading comprehension? Are they struggling to show their work in math?
-
Celebrate growth: Point out how much their handwriting, vocabulary, or problem-solving skills have improved since September.
4. Create a "Soft" Summer Strategy

You don't need to turn summer vacation into summer school, but you do want to prevent the "summer slide." Use the insights you've gathered to build a lightweight summer routine. If reading was a struggle, schedule weekly library trips and let them pick out graphic novels or magazines. If math facts were a hurdle, find engaging board games or apps that sneakily reinforce those skills.
The Ultimate Next Step:
Take the Guesswork Out of the Equation

While conversations, teacher feedback, and reviewing past assignments are excellent starting points, they often only provide puzzle pieces rather than the whole picture. It can be difficult to know for sure if a struggle is a minor bump in the road or a foundational gap that will make next year significantly harder.
That is where we come in.
At Eardley Education Solutions, we highly recommend scheduling a comprehensive Learning Skills Assessment as the school year wraps up or very early in the summer.
